Role Overview :
This position is for an intermittent employee of the Indiana Statehouse Tour Office (IDOA). Tour guides are the frontline representatives and ambassadors for the State of Indiana, meeting and greeting visitors during working hours. They staff the Information Desk and conduct guided tours of the building. The agency is looking for someone with the flexibility in their schedule to work intermittently up to 150 days a year. The Statehouse Tour Office is staffed weekdays from 8am-4 pm and on Saturdays from 10 am -2 pm, 1 day a month.
Salary Statement :
The salary for this position traditionally starts at $15.17/hr but may be commensurate with education or work experience.
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
• Maintaining a helpful and friendly attitude to visitors of all ages and backgrounds while remaining completely non-partisan on the job.
• Providing accurate information while staffing the desk and conducting tours. This is an on-site position.
• Present themselves professionally while interacting with in-person visitors and coworkers, and inquiries on the phone or via e-mail.
• Becoming familiar with Indiana history, the Indiana Statehouse, the three branches of government and the workings of state government, the Indianapolis community (especially as it relates to giving directions), and Indiana at large.
• Participating in special programming as needed.
• Other reasonable duties as requested by the manager or coordinator.
Physical requirements:
• Must be able to climb stairs and stand/walk on marble floor. Busy days may require up to 12 flights of stairs and several miles of walking.
• Some lifting (up to 20 pounds) may be required.
• 90-95% of the time will be indoors. There may be the occasion to meet or escort a group outside briefly.
• Must be comfortable speaking clearly in a public setting.

What You'll Need for Success:
The ideal candidate in this role should minimally have a
High school diploma or equivalent
At least 1 year of clerical experience applying the below, outlined knowledge, skills, and abilities in a similar role.
Someone with a genuine love of Indiana history and Indiana historic sites who likes to share their enthusiasm with others. Someone who can accurately relay information in an interest-appropriate manner to visitors who range in age from toddlers to senior adults.
You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment:
Working knowledge of general office functions and clerical procedures
Active listening skills
Excellent critical thinking skills
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively
Excellent attention to detail and proofreading skills
Proficient computer skills required, including but not limited to Microsoft Word, Excel, case management and data base tools.
Ability to work with sensitive documents and information, and be privy to sensitive agency information without divulging information to internal or external parties
Ability to work independently
Ability to provide effective and professional customer service to internal and external parties.
